Vintage Turbine Reliability

How to improve an old asset

More Power = More Revenue

Vintage generation assets provide new value to the grid as flexible backup

The rapid increase in renewables is transforming the way generation assets are dispatched on the grid. Renewables are driving change with new markets, demand curves, and dispatch timing. But, despite renewables popularity, there is still a very real need for flexible and reliable backups to stabilize the grid and ensure uninterrupted supply.

Many operators have vintage assets inside the fence line that can be started quickly but are often not reliable enough to be part of the solution for tomorrow’s grid demand curve. The good news is that in many cases, these vintage machines need relatively modest updating to be made reliable and begin contributing to the grid transformation and the operator’s revenue.

TTS has produced a simple cost-benefit review for improving vintage unit reliability that was presented at the EPRI meeting in Arizona this Spring. We are publishing our findings in a table that provides you:

  • Budgetary Costs
  • System Benefits
  • Pros and Cons Evaluations
  • Description of the Typical Upgrade Scope.

Upon review, you will have a better understanding of what technologies or actions make the best-valued outcome for your operations based on your specific drivers.

So, the question is what to do to make vintage machines more reliable?

If any of these drivers apply to your vintage unit(s) then download our Vintage Evaluation Table for a Cost Benefit review.
